Having a language assistant as a teacher in our English class is a great opportunity that we mustn’t waste.

This year Sam is our language assistant. He came from Arizona, USA. He is a very hardworking and determined man in his early twenties. These are some things you may want to know about him.

He had a very rare childhood. Having narcolepsy as a child can be difficult.

At first, his parents didn’t know what happened to him, and Sam didn’t know either.

He often fell asleep with no explanation, and his classmates laughed and played pranks on him. They made drawings on him while he was unconscious. But he had a few loyal friends that cared about Sam and helped him with taking notes for him.

During that time, his teachers, who didn’t know about the situation, got mad and he got into a lot of trouble. At first, when they called his family from the principal’s office, they didn’t believe anything. Then, they thought he was irrespons.

He was later diagnosed with narcolepsy. Fortunately, there was medication for this unusual illness. Since he started taking the medication, he has been living a normal life. There may be secondary effects but they don’t happen to him. Nowadays he is still taking the medication so he can spend normal days without falling asleep.

Sam went to NAV, (Northern Arizona University), for a few reasons. His father, who went to that university, knew a lot of things about it, and talked very good about it, so Sam chose to go to it. He also chose it because it was the nearest university to his house, where he lives with his grandfather.

Back then, Sam was so keen on Spanish, he was also very good at it. After being in Madrid he wanted to continue hearing it. “It is an important thing to know” Sam said. He things that it is great to know more than one language.

Moreover, he worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant while he was studying to make some money. The experience was good and bad. He learned good things to know about cooking and how to manage sharp dishes. But, on the other hand, there was such a stressful work environment that he wouldn’t return. Not everybody was kind, it was very hot and loud, he had to work past and there were lots of dishes.

“It was a bitter and sweet feeling, if l could travel in time, l wouldn’t work on that” Sam told us. Despite all those bad things, he liked making money, and he could eat free food. Also, his friend was a waiter in that restaurant.

And for those who don’t believe in real friendship. Sam has had two loyal friends since college. They are two nice and patient twins that liked studying the same things as him.
